Meatballs and Chris Makepeace
I wrote a little blurb about Chris Makepeace on this blog almost a year ago.
Anyway, last night I watched Meatballs. Now, keep in mind that Meatballs was filmed 30 years ago. 30 years! It makes me feel a little old. Chris Makepeace would have been all of about 14 when he made the movie. In fact, I have read antidotes about how Makepeace began puberty during the movie’s filming and started growing a little peach fuzz. Apparently, Bill Murray walked him through his first shave. How cute is that?
My point, though, is there I was watching Chris Makepeace as a little kid, with his milky white chicken chest and scrawny arms and legs. He was so tiny, so young. My mind kept flashing to how he is still so beautiful. I know he has not really been in anything since 1998 and the latest thing I really have a good mental image of him being in is 1996’s Synapse / Memory Run. He looks fully adult and quite lovely in Synapse. He even has a love scene.
But in Meatballs he’s a baby. I had such conflicted emotions as I watched him. Is it OK to look at his eyes and pretty smile and think about how attractive he is, considering the fact that when the movie came out he was older than me? Or, is it wrong since the me I am now and the Chris he was then are 24 years apart in age? Is it creepy?
Talk about confusing. I just wish the guy would get out there and realize he was amazing on screen and that by doing some more acting he would be doing the world a huge favor. We miss you, Chris.
