EBay Seller Boycott Starts Monday

I’m rooting for the eBay sellers that are planning to boycott the auction website beginning Monday, February 18. I used to sell on eBay, but the fees becmaew too steep for me a couple of years ago. Kudos to those who stuck it out in the meantime, but this last rate change put most people right over the edge.

Although eBay advertised that they would be reducing the initial listing fees for auctions, the percentage they demand of the final selling price will increase significantly. In the long run, that only means more money for eBay, even though they have been trying for over a month now to spin it like it’s a good move that will reduce fees for sellers.

Additionally, the feedback system will change. Sellers will no longer be able to leave negative commentary about their buyers. So, if your auction is hit by a scammer who requests a credit-card chargeback after they’ve already received their merchandise or a non-paying bidder, you have no way of letting everyone else know about the situation. If a buyer leaves you unwarranted negative feedback, you have no way to defend yourself either.

I do still like to buy items on eBay. I often find Baby Lulu and Gymboree dresses fro just a few dollars, plus shipping. But, in an act of solidarity, I will join the boycott next week and not place any bids. I urge others to do the same.
