What’s With the Cupcake Craze?
I just read an article about anew cupcake bakery opening in Tampa. They charge $2.75 for a single cupcake, $15.50 for a half dozen, and $30 for a dozen.
Cupcakes are cute, but when it all boils down to the sweet truth – they are simply single servings of cake and I am absolutely not going to pay $30 for 12 servings of cake. In fact, I am probably not going to pay $2.75 for one serving, unless it is served to me in a nice restaurant and I don’t have to clear my own table.
I bake a lot myself, so I understand the appeal of cupcakes. But, there are times I prefer to make a whole cake. Cupcakes dry out too fast. They are messier to serve to guests than slices of cake. You cannot write my daughter’s lengthy name on the top of a cupcake, either.
I remember reading about how on of my favorite actor was invited to a Passover meal in New York. He brought his non-Jewish girlfriend along and for some reason she felt compelled to stop and pick up cupcakes from the Magnolia bakery to take along to the Passover celebration. It seems that trendiness won out over appropriateness in the choosing of that particular gift.
Yes, I like cupcake, but I don’t understand the degree of the trend. Not at all. It’s a little cake. It certainly should not merit opening up an entire bakery.
