Vatican Art Coming to St. Petersburg
The Florida International Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida is getting a very exciting exhibit. Yesterday the museum staff started opening crates for the upcoming “Vatican Splendors From Saint Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museums and Swiss Guard.”
Removed by white-gloved artifact handlers were two items: “Daniel in the Lion’s Den,” a terracotta sculpture that dates to 1655, and the Mandylion of Edessa, a third to fifth century image on linen considered the oldest known icon of Jesus.
The exhibit will feature 200 pieces of art and historical objects that represent about 2,000 years. Visitors to the exhibit will see “Daniel in the Lion’s Den,” a terracotta sculpture that dates to 1655; the Mandylion of Edessa, a third to fifth century image on linen thought to be the oldest known representation of Jesus; bone fragments of St. Peter; personal belongings of Michelangelo; as well as tiaras, mosaics, paintings, papal rings, jewelry and embroidered vestments.
This exhibit marks the first time some of the objects have left the Vatican, including the “Daniel in the Lion’s Den” sculpture.
The exhibit starts February 9 and will run through May 11.
“Daniel in the Lion’s Den”, “Mandylion of Edessa”…it’s really the priceless treasure!
This art exhibit will be remarkable!
Oh it’s so exciting!
How neat is that!? I love to go to special exhibits like this…my kids, on the other hand, are big “eye rollers” when I drag them to such an event…sheesh! The only one they haven’t complained about is going to see Sue the big T-rex that is on display at our local fossil museum. Now, that to me sounds boring! lol!! I’ll take art over bones any day! lol!
