Identity Theft, Family Style
You think your family is going to be a safe haven from the evils of the world. I know I think that. I trust my immediate family with my money, my safety, my secrets and my life. We tend to fight a good deal, but never to the point where we would harm one another.
Parents, listen to this story. As a mom, I am absolutely FLOORED!
Sean Welsh of Spring Hill, Florida tried to steal about $80,000 from his mom, who suffers from dementia. How? He stole her identity and went about opening credit cards and sold her possessions (including selling his mom’s car to a suspected drug dealer).
Welsh is 37 and moved back in with his 75-year-old mother last May. By June he was already skimming her bank accounts, cashing checks.
The housekeeper was actually the one, bless her heart, who noticed Welch acting skeevy. She also came across the credit cards under Welsh’s pillow and noticed that two Oriental rugs valued at $14,000 were missing from the house.
At that point, the victim’s sister got involved and was able to thwart a goof bit of the fraudulent activity.
What did Welsh buy with the ill-gotten funds? A computer and a video game system, at least.
Welsh now faces multiple fraud-related charges, along with exploitation of the elderly and dealing in stolen property.
Only a son a mom could love? Probably not even his mom, if she were actually able to understand the situation. What a tool.
