Red Tide and Manatees

One of my favorite creates is the manatee. Red Tide is blooming and six more manatees have been found dead here in Florida.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says the manatees were found in Brevard County, but are not saying definitively that Red Tide is to blame. There have been four manatees that have died from Red Tide since October, though, so the odds are these new deaths are similarly caused.

The count of manatee deaths this year is the highest on Florida’s east coast since Florida started precise tracking in 1996. Generally, manatees that are affected by the Red Tide are in southwest Florida.

Red Tide is a difficult time of year for allergy sufferers as well, though I cannot think of any particular drug treatment that helps during the blooms. Red Tide is a high concentration of various types of algae, often referred to as a bloom. No human deaths have ever been attributed to Red Tide.
